Zambian Cricket

The Cricket's Good Fortune is the good luck received from a Zambian Cricket.

While blindfolded, a person must be able to distinguish the original cricket sound of a chirping Zambian Cricket from the echo of its sound, and catch the cricket to secure the Cricket's Good Fortune.

There are only limited chances for trying to capture the cricket and obtain the favorable outcome that comes with it; after too many failed attempts the person can no longer secure the Cricket's Good Fortune.

In preparation for The Dawning, Bo needed to catch the cricket, but failed to do so.

Trivia

• In Zambia, the Gryllotalpa africanus cricket is held to bring good fortune to anyone who sees it. Crickets are popular pets and are considered good luck in some countries; in China, crickets are sometimes kept in cages.

• The earliest Chinese literature shows appreciation for singing insects such as katydids, cicadas, and crickets. People started keeping pet crickets in their homes during the Tang dynasty (A.D. 618 to 906) not only for the song, but also because a cricket in the house was supposed to bring good luck.
